The IPL 2024 will see Shubman Gill in a new avatar. Gill will be captaining an IPL franchise full time for the first time in his career as he takes over the rein of 2022 champions Gujarat Titans.
With the departure of star allrounder Hardik Pandya under whose leadership GT on title on debut in 2021 before finishing as the runners-up last season, the responsibility to led the team has fallen on the young shoulders of Gill.

GT batting coach Gary Kirsten feels the captaincy role is going to be an important one for Gill who has so left a positive impression thus far the way he’s conducted himself as a leader.
“I think the leadership is going to be an important role for him and I know he’s really keen to do the job and we, as coaches, just need to assist him in making sure he’s getting the best out of his players, and he’s leading the team appropriately and in the way we want him to lead,” Kirsten was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
During IPL 2023, Gill was in red-hot form with the bat as he came close to beating the all-time record of most runs scored in a single season, set by Virat Kohli in 2016.
Gill scored 890 runs at a strike-rate of 157.80 from 17 innings last year including three centuries and four half-centuries.
“He’s a quality player. He’s a thoroughly nice person. He’s got massive motivation and determination as an individual, which we’ve seen when playing for India. But like any new leader, he’s starting from scratch, and he’s going to be met with challenges along the way and we, as coaches, will just have to assist him along the way,” Kirsten said.
Besides Pandya’s departure, GT will also have to deal with the absence of star pacer Mohammed Shami who has been out of the season due to an ankle injury. They will begin their IPL 2024 campaign when they host five-time champions Mumbai Indians on March 24.
