Former Pakistan batter Zaheer Abbas has described comparisons between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam as ‘pointless.’ He ripped apart Babar while speaking at the Cricket Predicta Conclave. The ex-Pakistan batter reserved some high praise for the talismanic Indian batter but did not feel quite the same for Babar. Abbas even felt that Babar should be dropped from the squad given his current performances.
“The comparisons are pointless, Virat Kohli scores in every match, the other player (Babar) doesn’t score in any match, so then how can you compare? The person who scores, he is the bigger player. Babar Azam should be dropped from the team,” he said as per multiple outlets.
Explaining his take, Zaheer Abbas said that Babar Azam needed to deliver as he was the main batter of the Pakistan team. According to him, if Babar could not help the team despite playing such an important role, he did not belong in the squad. “If he’s not scoring runs, because if he’s our main batsman and he’s out of form, he should be out of the team,” he added.
Zaheer Abbas also discussed how India remains one of the best cricket teams in the world. Praising skipper Rohit Sharma, he said, “The Indian team overall is very good. Their batters are doing well, and the bowlers are strong too. It is a very balanced team, one that plays thoughtfully. They have a very good captain who understands cricket very well. When everything is going in your favour, it is smooth sailing, and that’s the case with India right now.”
The Pakistan team has been under a lot of scrutiny due to their recent performances. They conceded a 0-2 loss against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series at home. Pakistan were beaten by 10 wickets in the opening Test of the bilateral series.
Babar was dismissed for a duck in the first innings before adding 22 runs in the second one. The following Test saw Babar put up scores of 31 and 11 but Pakistan lost the match by six wickets.
Virat Kohli, on the other hand, recently spearheaded India to a comfortable 2-0 victory in the Bangladesh Test series. He scored 47 runs in the first innings of the second Test before adding another unbeaten 29 to seal a seven-wicket victory for India.
