After missing out on the series opener in Mohali, Yashasvi Jaiswal returned with some impactful performances as India defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets in Indore. The 22-year-old opened the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma and top-scored with a 34-ball 68 in the chase of 173. Before shining with the bat, Jaiswal ran Fazalhaq Farooqi out on the final delivery of the first innings, showcasing his presence of mind and athleticism.
The Afghan duo of Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq looked to steam an extra over on the final delivery of their innings as wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma missed a direct hit. Naveen was on strike and after completing the first run, he rushed for the second but Farooqi wasn’t ready for it.
Jaiswal, backing up at square leg, collected the ball and got engaged in a race with Farooqi as the Indian youngster was reluctant to throw. Jasiwal managed to beat the Afghan tail-ender and dismissed him for a diamond duck.

After playing a match-winning knock, Jaiswal spoke to the bcci.tv on various aspects of the game and revealed what went through his mind while affecting the run out.
“I was a little confused. Maarun ke naa maarun… And then I decided I should sprint and dislodge the wickets,” he said.

Jaiswal also featured in a 57-run partnership with Virat Kohli for the second wicket after Rohit fell for a first-ball duck. Kohli scored a quick-fire 16-ball 29, with the help of 5 boundaries, before losing his wicket to Naveen. Speaking about the partnership, the young batter said it’s a privilege to bat alongside Kohli.
“It’s always a pleasure to bat along with Virat Bhaiyya. It’s an honour to play with him. We had the conversations like what shot we can play on this wicket or which areas we can hit,” he added.
‘Skipper gives me freedom’
Jaiswal further revealed that he has been given complete freedom from captain Rohit Sharma to go in the middle and play his natural game.
“Wo kehte hain tu jaa aur bindaas khel (Just go and play your shots freely). He’s always there to look after us. It’s always incredible if you have a senior like him,” he added.
