'Exit Survey Says...': IIT-B Responds to Report That Many of Its Students Did Not Get Jobs
The post came after reports that 712 of around 2,000 students (about 36%) of IIT-B had yet to secure jobs this year

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay has reacted to reports that a sizeable portion of its students did not get jobs during this year’s placement drive.

It shared on X (formerly Twitter) what it says are the results of an exit survey, stressing that “among graduating students in 2022-23 says only 6.1% are still looking for jobs”.

The post came after reports that 712 of around 2,000 students (about 36%) of IIT-B had yet to secure jobs this year. Placement season in the top B-school begins in December and officially ends in May.

The exit survey, which cited last year’s data, underscored the break-up of students placed, looking for jobs, and eyeing start-up roles and public service, among others.

A significant portion —57.1 per cent— of students got placements facilitated by IIT Bombay, according to the data shared by the institute. Some 10.3 per cent ventured beyond the institute’s offerings to seek employment opportunities. Meanwhile, 1.6 per cent charted their entrepreneurial journey by establishing start-ups and 12.2 per cent set their sights on higher education. The data also showed 6.1 per cent were still looking for jobs.

The data that led to the recent reports about 36 per cent students not getting jobs during the placement drive came from Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus of the institute and founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group. Singh, who has been mentoring students for over two years, highlighted the statistic based on his observations and engagement within the alumni network.
