Since making its way to the OTT platform, the heartwarming Vidhu Vinod Chopra film “12th Fail,” which stars Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar, has amassed more and more fans and appreciation for accurately depicting IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma’s real-life story. The movie, which is based on Anurag Pathak’s best-selling book of the same name, revolves around Sharma, who, despite financial and personal obstacles, passed the UPSC test on his fourth and last attempt to become an IPS officer. It also emphasises the significance of Shraddha Joshi, Sharma’s wife and an IRS official, and her contributions to Manoj’s feats.
While much has been written about Manoj and Shraddha’s portrayals in the film and how they encourage one another, there is one more character who needs to be recognised for his role in supporting Manoj. In an interview with Lallantop, IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma went on to speak about Anurag Pathak, the author of the novel based on his life, who is also his closest friend. Sharma described Pathak as the embodiment of friendship and recounted anecdotes about Pathak’s steadfast support throughout his difficult times. His description of Pathak’s role in his life draws striking parallels to that of Pritam Pandey from the movie.
“Anurag is one such friend who has been there and supported me in life like no one else could ever. He is the definition of the word friendship,” Sharma expressed, reiterating Pathak’s profound influence on the course of his life as he pursued his dream of becoming an IPS officer.

Sharma humorously recounted their shared history while staying in Delhi, stating, “He was the one getting money from home. I had nothing on me. But he would give me his wallet and then ask me for Rs 8 of his own money to buy Chow Mein.”

Gwalior-born novelist Anurag Pathak currently resides in Indore and has had considerable influence on Hindi literature. He is well-known for works that include the popular novel “Twelfth Fail” and “Whatsapp Par Kranti,” a collection of stories. He received an MA and PhD in Hindi literature from Maharani Laxmibai Arts and Commerce College in Gwalior.
