Avik Das secured an All India 69th rank in JEE Advanced 2024 with a score of 307/360, scored 705 out of 720 marks in NEET UG and ranked seventh in West Bengal JEE

This year, a total of 48248 students have passed the JEE Advanced 2024. Among them, Avik Das is also one of the toppers of the IIT Guwahati zone. He has secured an All India 69th rank in JEE Advanced 2024 with a score of 307/360. The 17-year-old has not only topped JEE Advanced but also cracked NEET UG and the WBJEE 2024. He scored 705 out of 720 marks in NEET UG and ranked seventh in West Bengal JEE.

Avik’s dream is to become an astrophysicist. For this, he wants to take admission to the BS-MS in Physics course at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Avik Das says that since childhood he has been interested in celestial bodies, space, stars, galaxies, supernovae, and black holes. He started reading the books of famous physicist Stephen Hawking in class five itself. This inspired him to become an astrophysicist.  “I aspire to become an astrophysicist and have secured admission in IISc for a Bachelor of Science. Excelling in both the JEE and NEET was crucial for achieving this goal, and I am happy to have succeeded in both,” said Avik.

Hailing from the small town of Alipurduar in Bengal, he attended Alipurduar McWilliam High School, where I achieved rank 1 in the WB state board for Class 12th with a score of 99.2 per cent. In Class 10, he secured the 4th rank in the WB state board. Avik says did not get any good coaching for JEE and NEET so he took online coaching for JEE from Allen Digital. Apart from coaching, he also did a lot of self-study. He used to study for about 10 hours every day. “Preparing for these competitive exams is a marathon, and studying from home ensured that I stayed mentally refreshed. For me, studying is about gaining knowledge, not just securing good marks,” he told News18. He also appeared for both sessions of JEE Main this year and secured 99.9803 percentile.

Avik Das’s father Pradeep Kumar Das is a teacher of Science and Maths in a government high school. He says that Avik is very fond of reading books apart from the syllabus. Whatever book Avik asked for, he always brought it for him. He says that Avik had decided in the 10th class itself that he wanted to make a career in Astrophysics and take admission to IISc. Avik’s mother is a homemaker.

Talking about his preparation for JEE Advanced and NEET UG, he says that his strategy has been to practice regularly and analyze his mistakes. He said that to score good marks, it is necessary to have very good preparation in Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. He believes in understanding the concepts rather than memorizing things. “Focus on understanding the concepts and following a disciplined routine, and you will easily succeed,” said he. Avik says that two years of preparation for JEE takes a toll on the mental health of the candidate. It is very important to remain calm during the exam. In such difficult times, the family comes forward to help. My mother supported me a lot in this journey.
