Manchester United To Hold Talks About Mason Greenwood’s Future Soon, Says Report
The English international, who has been on loan with Getafe in La Liga is coveted by other Spanish sides too as Manchester United seek to arrive at a decision regarding his future at Old Trafford.

Manchester United seems not yet ready to part ways with Mason Greenwood. The English forward joined Getafe in the La Liga for a season-long loan in September last year and has been playing for the Spanish side since then. As the January transfer window has already opened, Getafe have expressed their wish to sign a permanent contract with Greenwood.

Three major La Liga clubs– Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid– are also reportedly interested in the 22-year-old. Amid all of these, Manchester United have decided to hold talks with Greenwood this month to discuss his future, according to a report by the Athletic.

The Old Trafford hierarchy chose to loan out Greenwood after the footballer was accused of attempted rape and assault back in January 2022. As soon as the news broke, Manchester United suspended Greenwood from training and matches. He stayed out of all first-team action for nearly 18 months before agreeing to the loan move to Getafe.

Even after all the criminal charges against him were dropped in February last year, the Premier League club refused to integrate Greenwood into the squad. Before the controversial incident would happen, Greenwood was tipped to be one of the most promising forwards in England.

Following his senior team debut in July 2019, Greenwood made 129 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions. He scored 35 goals and provided 12 assists before shifting his base to Madrid.

Greenwood has shown significant development during his loan spell at Getafe. He has already recorded 5 goals and 4 assists for the Spanish outfit, which now wants to make his services permanent. However, it is unlikely the deal will be completed during the January transfer window as Greenwood’s loan contract perhaps has no break clause.

Getafe are reportedly ready to pay their record transfer fee of €46 million to secure Greenwood’s permanent signing. As part of his existing loan contract, the Madrid minnows will also earn 20 per cent of the player’s future sales.

During Getafe’s last La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano, Greenwood was sent off following a verbal altercation with the on-field referee, Figueroa Vasquez. After the match was over, the match official said in a statement that the English international abused him verbally which prompted him to show the Red Card. Getafe ended up suffering a 2-0 defeat at the home game.
