World Cup 2014: Five headlines from the sidelines
Here are five off-the-field headlines from the football World Cup 2014 that you might have missed.

When it comes to the World Cup the action almost always spills over from the football field to the streets, the team hotels and the fans.

Here are 5 off-the-field headlines from the world cup that you might have missed:

1. Arjen Robben is the flash

The Arjen Robben run that left Spain's Sergio Ramos panting has been clocked at 37 km/h. That means in a 100metre dash Robben would clock 10.28 seconds. The record now is 9.58 seconds which was run by Usain Bolt. Not bad for a 30-year-old football wearing spikes and running on grass.

2. Croatia players like to swim, naked.

Croatia's players are running scared of the media. This after pictures emerged of them relaxing in the pool. The only problem is that most of them were naked. No, not even those Speedos. Naked as the day they were born. Now, the team management is in damage control mode and the players have been told not to speak to the media.

3. Footballers are not just money making machines

Just before the Australia, Chile game on June 14th, as the two teams lined up, something beautiful happened.

In a sport where hair gel is about as important as a new advertising contract, Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano set a new benchmark for a role model.

The child accompanying Bresciano was on crutches and when his shoe laces came undone; Bresciano went down on his knees, bent over and tied his laces. The image has gone viral on social networking websites.

4. Spanish fan proves loyalty doesn't pay

Not every fan was left dejected by Spain's 1-5 loss to Netherlands. One fan in particular cashed in on his frustrations with the national team. He bet against the Armada and ended up taking home a $135,000 jackpot.

5. Japan's fans are OCD maniacs

Well, no they aren't. But they are the tidiest of the bunch. After the Ivory Coast game, realising the stadium staff had their hands full, the Japanese fans cleaned up their seats themselves. Aw, now isn't that great. We really need these guys at some of our IPL matches.

What's your reaction?
