TIRUNELVELI: A total of 13 candidates are in the fray for the Sankarankoil by-election scheduled to be held on March 18. Totally, 33 candidates, representing various political parties and independents, filed their nominations for the by-election and during scrutiny, 20 nominations were rejected and 13 were accepted. Meanwhile the last date for withdrawal of nominations ended at 3 pm on Saturday (March 3). However, no nomination was withdrawn till the stipulated time. So, the 13 candidates continue to remain in the fray. RO changedThe EC, on Saturday appointed N Paramasivam, Special Duty Collector, River Water Linking Project, Tirunelveli, as the Returning Officer for the Sankarankoil bypoll. He assumed charge on Saturday afternoon.Initially, P Selvaraj, AC (Excise), Tirunelveli, was designated as RO. He is due to retire on April 30, 2012 and as per the EC rules, no election related work is to be entrusted to the officers who are going to retire within six months. As such, the EC has appointed new RO with effect from Saturday.Captain’s CampaignDMDK president Vijaykanth will campaign for his party candidate K Muthukumar at Sankarankoil for six days from March 11, a party release said. Further, party leaders Premalatha VijayAkanth and Panruti S Ramachandran are also set to campaign at Sankarankoil.
