KOCHI: A total of 16 candidates have filed their nomination for the Piravom byelections when the filing of nomination papers ended on Wednesday. Eleven candidates filed their papers on the last day.The UDF has fielded Anoop Jacob, son of the late T M Jacob, as its candidate. M J Jacob, who was defeated by T M Jacob in the last Assembly election, is the LDF candidate. The BJP has named K R Rajagopal.All-India Forward Bloc’s Suresh N T filed his papers on Wednesday. Salim filed his papers as a candidate of the Socialist Republic Party. Bindu Haridas, of Kerala Paksham, also filed her papers on the last day.While Daisy Jacob, mother of Anoop Jacob, filed the nomination as a dummy candidate for the UDF candidate, Salim filed his papers as a dummy candidate for the CPM. Anoop Jacob Pallithazhathu, the namesake of Anoop Jacob, was another candidate who filed the nomination.There is a total of 1,83,170 voters in Piravom, of which 93,146 are women. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on Thursday. District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth has already said that the nominations should not be rejected on trivial grounds. He said that nominal mistakes should not be taken seriously. The candidates can withdraw their nominations on March 3.Chief Electoral officer Nalini Netto has approved the final list of 800 officials for election duty. The officials had been selected from a list of 1,500. The selected officials will get their orders by Saturday, election deputy collector S Shanawaz said.Teachers and women have been excluded from election duty. Moreover, officials having vote in Piravom constituency have been excluded from duty, which is an attempt to avoid postal votes. Four officials each would be deployed in the 134 booths. The training for the presiding officer and the first polling officer will be held on March 5.
