Indore: The death of 17 patients within 24 hours has put the spotlight on a state-run hospital in Madhya Pradesh amid allegations that oxygen supply to different wards had been snapped. Seven patients, six of who were on ventilators, died within 30 minutes.
The administration of Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital has denied the allegations, claiming that if the central oxygen supply was snapped, all patients admitted would have been affected. They said 10 to 15 deaths a day was “usual in big hospitals”.
Prakash, the son of one the deceased patients, Narayan Narwal, said his father was stable at night, but died at 4am the next morning. He also claimed that he overheard hospital staff talking about “disruption in oxygen supply”.
The Dean of the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, affiliated to the hospital, confirmed that three infants had died on Thursday. One of them was born prematurely.
Sanjay Dubey, the administrative head of the hospital and the divisional commissioner, told reporters that he had inspected the wards in question and did not find any disruptions in oxygen supply. Dubey cited hospital records and claimed that 12 to 25 deaths had been witnessed in a single day in the past.
Superintendent in-charge, Dr VS Paul, said those who died were critically ill. He also denied any disruption in oxygen supply.
