The electricity subsidy offered by the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab has provided immense relief to consumers with around 90% households getting “zero electricity bills”, officials said.
Under the scheme, the government provides 300 units of electricity free per month to households in Punjab. Since the power bill is generated once every two months, this comes to 600 free units of electricity for every two months.
The scheme was implemented as soon as Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann took oath in March 2022.
This is also the first time in the last two decades that the Punjab government has paid more than the specified amount to PowerCom. Last year, in the month of April, the Punjab government was to pay Rs 1,751 crore for the electricity subsidy, but the state government has already paid Rs 1790.62 crore to Powercom.
Prior to this, PowerCom was always paid less than the stipulated subsidy and used to send letters to the Punjab government asking for payment for the subsidy.
Apart from this, the Punjab government, has also dedicated the private thermal plant of Goindwal Sahib to the people.
The Mann government also created history by starting a coal mine in Panchuara of Jharkhand, officials said. With the mine, which was closed for many decades, open again, there will be no shortage of coal in Punjab for 30 years, officials added.
The Panchuara Coal Mine was allotted to the state, but it was closed since 2015 since previous governments didn’t attempt restoring coal supply. The Mann government took up the matter in March 2022.
