Titled Shifting terrain, a painting exhibition in the city captivates the viewer into its seamless shift of colours on a canvas that is barely representational of the artist Pandurang Deoghare creative flair. Based in Mumbai, the painter who has been splashing colour over the canvas for the past 25 years says of his abstract collection, “Abstract art has the capacity to possess multiple meanings and is left open to the interpretation of the viewer. The form of expression is neither realistic nor figurative or representational.”The exhibition projects various landscapes in an abstract form which are based on geographical terrains through acrylic and water colour. They depict a solemn topography in sombre colours with mappings of a textured plotting. Mapping is a technique used in almost all the paintings which according to the artist is a form to express the notion of “finding your own way through an unknown terrain.” The colours used in the exhibition are very soothing to the eyes, sober and spiritual with no stark contrasts and a lot of shades of black and white. The painter has used numerics to depict ancient periodicity which enhances the sanctity of the paintings. As the painter decodes the terrains of deserts, seascapes and mountains he effectively portrays the aura behind these landscapes. Finally Pandurang Deoghare says, “The paintings are an expression of what the human eyes see with a mixture of my own experiences of life. I just depict what I experience through colours and leave it to the viewers to derive their own meanings.” The exhibition is a result of one and a half years of his hard-work and will next make their way to Chennai on August 21. Through smooth renderings, deep textures and engraved mappings the shifting terrains seem to tie the human and sacred together. Shifting Terrains definitely engages its viewers into interpreting the paintings in their own way like any form of abstract art should. The exhibition is open at the Icon Art Gallery till May 5.
