Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, is a much-anticipated and extensively celebrated Hindu festival held across India to commemorate the birth of Lord Ganesha. Ganpati Bappa is revered as the god of new beginnings, wisdom, prosperity and the remover of obstacles. He is often worshipped at the onset of any new ambition, intellectual pursuit, or business initiative.
Lord Ganesha is said to have been born during the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month, which occurs in August or September. Ganesh Visarjan falls on the same day as Anant Chaturdashi, a festival honouring Lord Vishnu.
According to Drik Panchang, this year, Ganesh Chaturthi will begin on September 7 and go on till September 17. Many devotees welcome bappa home for good fortune and prosperity during Ganesh Chaturthi. They engage in organising sermons and making prayers for the next 10 days. At the end of the 10th day, devotees bid an emotional goodbye to Ganpati with Visarjan.

Ganesh Visarjan marks the end of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Anant Chaturdashi is also known as the last day of the 10-day festival.
On this day, as the name suggests, Lord Ganapati’s idol is immersed (‘visarjan’ meaning immersion) in a river, sea, or water body. Devotees conduct processions bearing their adored God’s idols and perform immersion. Ganesh Visarjan is more than just a ritual and has a cultural and religious significance.
The Fascinating History and Tradition of Ganesh Visarjan
The ritual of Ganesh Visarjan has a fascinating backstory. With Visarjan, it is thought that Lord Ganesha returns to his celestial abode.
On the final day of the celebration, it is thought that Lord Ganesha makes his way back to Mount Kailash to reunite with his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
The festival also symbolises the significance of the life-death cycle. Moreover, it is believed that the numerous obstacles in the house are removed when Lord Ganesha idol is taken for immersion.
Ganesh Visarjan Significance
Every year, people wait with great anticipation to celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Like always, we also hope that this year, the Remover of Obstacles showers his devotees with good fortune and wipes out all the struggles from their lives.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great fanfare for 10 days in Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, among other states.
