Bengaluru Water Crisis: The order passed by BWSSB states that water should not be used for car washing, gardening, construction work or entertainment purposes

Amid the ongoing water crisis in Bengaluru, the city’s Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has come up with strict measures to prevent the wastage of water in the city.

The BWSSB passed an order banning the usage of water for car washing, gardening, water fountains, construction work, maintenance or entertainment purposes. A fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed on anyone found violating the order. Malls and theatres must only use water for drinking purposes.

Anyone found using water for the above-mentioned purposes will be fined an amount of Rs 5000 penalty. First-time offenders will be fined Rs 5,000 and repeat offenders will be required to pay Rs 5,500 if they’re found wasting water.

The BWSSB has also issued a number to register complaints on the wastage of water.

Bengaluru Water Crisis

Bengaluru and parts of Karnataka are facing the worst water crisis caused by the failure of both southwest and northeast monsoons in the state. The metropolitan city has seen declining groundwater levels, diminishing reservoirs, dried bore wells and water supply cuts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the prime reason for scanty rainfalls in the state in 2023 due to the El Nino effect.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has set up a control room to tackle water supply challenges in 110 villages across 35 wards.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that the government would seize unregistered water tankers if their owners fail to register with the authorities by March 7.

“Of the total 3,500 water tankers in Bengaluru city, only 10 per cent, that is 219 tankers, have registered with the authorities. The government will seize them if they don’t register before the deadline. Water is not the property of any individual but is a resource that belongs to the government. The government has the right to take control of water sources,” he had said at a press conference.
