Paes and Bhupathi moved to doubles quarterfinals with their partners.

New Delhi: Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi advanced to the men's doubles quarterfinals with their respective partners after facile wins in the third round of the Australian Open on Monday.

While Bhupathi and his Bahamian partner Mark Knowles defeated Nicolas Lapentti and Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4, Paes and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy, seeded fourth, beat locals Paul Hanley and Jordan Kerr 6-2, 7-5.

Bhupathi-Knowles pair next faces the Spanish pair of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco. Paes and Dlouhy will be up against Italians Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi.

The third seeds Bhupathi and Knowles took 70 minutes to dispatch the unseeded Ecuadorian-Spanish duo in their third round clash.

However, the winners were trifle patchy as they, in total, squandered six breakpoints in the match. Bhupathi-Knowles broke their rivals thrice and saved two breakpoints enroute to the victory.

In contrast, Paes and Dlouhy were dominant throughout and did not face single break point in the match.

Among the juniors, Kaza Vinayak Sharma joined compatriot and top seed Yuki Bhambri in the boys singles second round after carving out a facile 6-4, 6-2 win over Sweden's Patrik Brydolf.

However, it was curtains for Sudarwa Sitaram, who lost his opening round clash 3-6, 4-6 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France.

The Indian challenge ended in the girls singles event with the defeat of Kyra Shroff, who suffered a 0-6, 3-6 mauling at the hands of Monika Tumova of Czech Republic.

The combination of Vinayak Sharma and Roanak Manuja fell in the first round of boys doubles after losing 6-7 (1), 0-6 in the first round.

In girls doubles, the Indian pair of Tanvi Shah and Rashmi Teltumbde went down fighting against Ester Goldfeld of America and Briton Hannah James.

They lost 4-6, 6-7 (5) in the first round.

Shroff and her Canadian partner Eugenie Bouchard though advanced to second round after their opponents conceded their first round match. The Indo-Canadian pair had won the first set 6-1 when their opponents called it quits.

MEN'S QUARTERFINAL LINE UP

Here is how that quarter-final line up looks in the men's singles competiton.

Djokovic and Roddick promise to be an exciting match up on Tuesday, as does Federer versus the rapidly improving Del Potro. Nadal starts favourite against Simon and Tsonga is expected to come through against Verdaso.

WOMEN'S QUARTERFINAL LINE UP

And in the women's singles quarterfinals Marion Bartoli is up against Vera Zvonarova, while Dinara Safina will face Jelena Dokic.

Elena Dementieva takes on Carla Suarez Navarro, while Serena Williams will face Svetlana Kuznetsova.

SERENA ON MATCH WITH RODDICK

Serena Williams is three matches away from her fourth title at this year's Australian Open, but in the media box the interest seems to be on a match that Serena played as a 10-year-old against Andy Roddick - who is the seventh seed this year.

Serena won that encounter hands down and there has been talk of a possible re-match.

Roddick apparently wants one, but Serena isn't having any of it, happy in the knowledge that she leads the series between the two.

What's your reaction?
