BMC launches special sanitation drive

The Bubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched sanitation programme aimed at making the city clean before August 31, the Local Self-Governance Day.

Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Sanjib Misra, Deputy Mayor Bharti Singh and BMC’s Public Health Standing Committee Chairman Sheikh Nizamuddin kicked off the drive. The drive, which began with wards 32, 33, 34 and 26, will target four wards at a time and cover the whole city in the next two months.

“The drive will focus on cleaning garbage dumped by households. Many people have dug up large pits to dump their garbage, these places will be cleaned and the garbage disposed of,” said Jena. The piled up garbage that has not been cleared till date will also be a top priority for the sanitation workers.

The existing sanitation workers of every ward will be a part of the drive. Ironically, it is not clear as to why the drive is being called special with no additional force to clear the mess. “If the existing sanitation workers can do the cleaning for a special sanitation drive, then why cannot they do it on a regular basis,” said Aarti Dash, a housewife.

The BMC will also be dealing with the mosquito menace. The State Health Department has provided two persons to assist the BMC. The City will be sprayed with liquid mosquito repellent. “This will continue for the next three months,” announced Jena.

The BMC will be using its workforce and equipment for the sanitation drive.
