Washington: First daughter Barbara Bush's purse was stolen while she was in Argentina with her twin sister Jenna, a law enforcement source who was briefed on the incident told CNN on Tuesday.

Barbara Bush's mobile phone and purse were snatched when she and her twin Jenna, were dining in San Telmo, Buenos Aires's picturesque arts and dining neighbourhood - this despite the fact that Secret Service agents have been assigned for her protection.

However, the source told CNN that Barbara Bush, 24, was "not in the immediate proximity" of the bag when it was stolen.

The Secret Service agents, according to the police, said that they "did not notice anything", while the Secret Service refused to comment on the issue.

However, though the source declined to provide additional details, he said, "at no point were the protectees out of visual contact and at no point was there any risk of harm."

An administration official confirmed "a theft incident" involving Barbara Bush in Argentina, but gave no details either.

The White House and the Secret Service both declined comment.

The theft was not the only difficulty the Secret Service experienced during the twins’ two-week visit according to ABC News, which reported that one of the agents got into an altercation after a night on the town and was beaten up.
