KOCHI: Sham and Jasmine were happy being married till Sham’s brother convinced him that Jasmine was a bad omen and should be killed to live a peaceful life. It has been 12 years since the first attempt to kill Jasmine was made. Differences between Sham and Jasmine finally made way to their divorce. However, destiny had some other plans for them. After over a decade of separation, Sham and Jasmine have finally decided to reunite and live the rest of their lives together. The decision was taken at the Settlement Mediation Camp held in Kochi on Saturday.Sham and Jasmine’s case was only one among the 45 disputes settled at the mediation camp organised by the Ernakulam district mediation centre, the bar association and Karayogam here. Of the 45 cases, three were of families fighting for a divorce for more than three years. According to George Pallathu, an advocate, the programme was also an eye opener for many families as they were exposed to the possibility of solving their disputes approaching legal procedures. Otherwise, they had to rely on regular adalats. “We are planning to go ahead with many such regular mediation camps as they will be of great benefit to the public,” George Pallathu added. Also, the Bar Association is planning to conduct awareness programmes on the benefits of attending the mediation camps. Says camp-coordinator Sunitha, “Most of the families were relieved after attending the camp as it enabled them to solve their disputes in much lesser time and was money-saving.”In spite of the initial success of the camp, Sunitha was disappointed that they were not able to solve all the pending cases as they had intended. “We were planning to solve 213 cases through this camp but could solve only a few cases as most of the second parties failed to turn up,” she said.Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan inaugurated the function. At least 33 trained mediators were present at the camp. They were awarded `3000 for solving a case each.
