At least 61 people have been killed and 300 others injured in 11 bomb blasts.

New Delhi: After Assam witnessed 11 bomb blasts in Guwahati and some other cities on Thursday morning, Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta has said that the Centre is co-ordinating with the Assam government to keep the situation under control.

"We have sent special teams there. We are also working closely with the state government on this matter," said Gupta.

At least 61 people have been killed and 300 others injured in 11 bomb blasts which rocked Guwahati and some other cities of Assam on Thursday morning.

In Guwahati the blasts took place on Dispur Road, Pan Bazaar, Ganeshguri and Fancy Bazaar.

More bombs exploded in Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Bongaigoan districts. The bomb at Ganeshguri was planted in a car and took place about 100 meters from Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's official residence.

Curfew had been imposed on Guwahati, following mob violence that broke out earlier.

Frustrated and angry crowds pelted the police with stones.

Police and fire brigade vehicles were burnt and many people were hurt in the violence.

Reports say police have had to fire in the air at some places to control the crowds. The curfew was to be lifted at 8 pm.

Experts say that a new threat seems to be emerging in the region and for the Assam government, looking for those responsible for the blasts could be even more challenging.

All the blasts took place almost simultaneously at about 1130 hrs IST at crowded marketplaces.

Intelligence sources have told CNN-IBN that the 'Bravo Company' of the 28th battalion of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) could be behind the blasts.

Two companies of the 28th battalion of ULFA - Alfa and Charlie - have already signed a ceasefire agreement with the government of Assam.

ULFA therefore finds itself decimated completely.

However, other officials suspect All Tripura Tiger Force, who trained along with the ULFA.

These two groups are the only ones which have the capability of organising such coordinated blasts.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has called for an emergency meeting in Guwahati.
