The total number of accused in the case, according to the 400-page chargesheet filed by Valapattanam Circle Inspector U Preman, was 33. All the accused are either CPM workers or supporters of the party.
K V Sumesh, a block committee member of the DYFI, is the first accused in the murder case. CPM Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan and DYFI state secretary T V Rajesh MLA are the 32nd and 33rd accused, respectively.
The first to seventh accused- K V Sumesh, Ganesan, Anoop, Vijesh, Prakasan, Umesan and Pavithran- all CPM and DYFI workers, were directly involved in the murder of Muslim League worker Abdul Shukkoor, according to the chargesheet.
They were charged with Sections 302 and 307 of the IPC. The rest of the accused were involved in abetting the crime and the conspiracy to murder.
P Jayarajan and T V Rajesh were charged under Section 118 of the IPC for not trying to prevent the murder even after getting information on the conspiracy.
Four of those involved in the case are absconding and efforts are being made to nab them, stated the police.
According to the chargesheet, the accused reached the house of one Muhammed Kunhi at Keezhara at around 2.30 pm on February 20 and hatched a conspiracy to murder Abdul Shukkoor and four other Muslim League workers who had sought refuge in the house.
The League workers had reached the house fleeing from a violent mob of CPM workers. Shukkoor was stabbed to death after his photo was identified by A V Babu, who had gone into hiding after the murder.
The provocation for the murder was the attack on the car of P Jayarajan and T V Rajesh on February 20.
They were on their way to Ariyil near Pattuvam where political clashes and violence had caused a tense situation.
The two CPM leaders were admitted to the Taliparamba Cooperative Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the attack.
The conspiracy to murder Shukkoor followed and both the leaders knew about the conspiracy, according to the chargesheet filed by the investigating police team.
