The first session of the newly elected Chhattisgarh Assembly is likely to begin from the first week of the January next year, a senior official said in Raipur on Wednesday.
"The first session of the fourth assembly of the state may start from January 6, 2014," the official posted at the secretariat of the state assembly said. According to him, a pro-tem speaker will be elected on the first day of the session, after which oaths would be administered to new members and a speaker of house will be nominated.
Later, the Governor would address the house on the same day.
Sources said that senior member of the house and Congress MLA Satyanarayan Sharma, who has been elected as legislator for the sixth time, would be made pro-tem speaker. Meanwhile, sources in the ruling BJP said that legislator Gaurishankar Agrawal, who has been elected from Kasdol constituency, would be elected assembly speaker.
Agrawal is considered close to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh under whose leadership, the BJP won a thumping victory for the third straight time, winning 49 of 90 seats in the just concluded Chhattisgarh assembly elections. On the other hand, the Congress managed to win 39 eats in the Chhattisgarh assembly. Rest of the two seats went to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and an independent each.
