Cops 'wanted' Rizwanur Rehman to leave his Hindu wife.

Kolkata: The probe report on the death of Rizwanur Rehman, who was found dead after the Kolkata police allegedly harassed him to leave his Hindu wife, doesn’t implicate police officers and is silent on how he died.

A senior state government officer acknowledged the Criminal Investigation Department’s report does not “accuse anyone specifically”. The report “did not mention if it was a case of suicide and also did not accuse anyone specifically," said Home Secretary P R Roy.

Police allegedly started harassing Rehman after he married Priyanka, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi, on August 18. Senior police officers allegedly asked him to leave his wife and on September 21 he was dead near railway tracks.

Kolkata police chief Prasun Mukherjee has said Rehman committed suicide but the dead man’s family claims he was murdered. Rehman’s family, in a letter to a human rights organisation, claim that senior police officers repeatedly summoned him to their headquarters and threatened him.

The letter alleges that Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajoy Kumar warned Rehman that he would be framed for abduction and theft if he didn’t leave Priyanka.

Home Secretary Roy said the CID had not come to any conclusion. "The report contains the facts of inquiry as of today and the case has not been closed. I don't think it (the report) is very important. It deals only with an unnatural death case," PTI quoted Roy as saying.
