City schools to be smoke-free

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation Mayor K Chandrika here on Tuesday said that all schools that come under the City Corporation limits will be made free of tobacco products. She was speaking at a function organised to declare the schools here smoke-free.  The Mayor said that the Corporation officials have embarked on an inspection drive at shops functioning within a 100-m radius of schools. The licence of the shops which are found selling tobacco products will be cancelled with immediate effect, if caught.  She also urged the public to inform the officials of City Corporation, Police or Health Department if they find shops near schools selling tobacco products.  Education Standing Committee Chairperson K S Sheela and Additional District Medical Officer Dr Sheela Joseph also attended the  function.
