PUDUCHERRY: Even as controversy rages over the alleged use of proxy by Education minister, PNL Kalyanasundaram, to clear his SSLC supplementary exam, it has been found that the ruling AINRC candidate for Indira Nagar by-poll is the most educated and the Congress candidate the richest. Among the top contenders, A Tamilselvan, AINRC, has a Masters degree in economics from Annamalai University, Congress candidate A Arumugham is an SSLC graduate from Nettapakkam Government High School and AIADMK candidate Suttukeni Baskaran has passed class VIII. Among the five other candidates in the fray S Veeraraghavan is BE(Mechanical Engineering) from Madras University and D Tamilselvam, independent, has passed class X. R Shanmugham of Indiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) and K Vaithiyanathan of BSP have both passed class VIII.An analysis of the seven candidates’ assets, by P Joseph Victor Raj of Puducherry Election Watch, has revealed that Arumugham tops the list with Rs. 3.97 crore. AIADMK candidate Suttukeni Baskaran is second with Rs 1.24 crore.S Veeraraghavan is worth Rs 57.9 lakh, D Tamilselvam is worth Rs. 44.35 lakh, A Tamilselvan Rs. 49.1 lakh and R Shanmugham of Indiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) Rs. 1 lakh. BSP candidate K Vaithianathan who is worth Rs. 13,000 has only movable assets. Incidentally, Tamilselvan is among the five candidates who did not file his income tax returns. Among the two candidates who filed their income tax returns, Arumugham showed a total income of Rs. 15.8 lakh, which included those of his spouse and a dependent, while Venkateswaran has an income of Rs. 5.9 lakh which also includes those of his spouse and a dependent for the year 2010-2011. There is only one candidate with criminal record. There are three cases registered against Veeraraghavan including a case under IPC section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt).
