Grading will be mandatory but students can also opt for a Board exam.

New Delhi: Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday said that grading system will be introduced in all Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated schools from the next academic year.

Students will be graded for their performance through the year and not just on the basis of one exam. Grading will be mandatory but students can also opt for a Board exam.

“Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) supports making Class X examination optional in CBSE system,” Kapil Sibal said at a press conference.

“There is a pan-India consensus over the issue. So we have decided to go ahead with this,” Sibal added.

According to the Minister, a historic consensus between the state and the Centre was achieved in implementing the reforms.

HRD Ministry officials believe this move would help relieve the stress on thousands of students and their families.

Officials said all schools, which have Class 11 and 12, need not conduct the Class 10 exams, but schools with classes up to standard 10 may conduct the Board examination.

Under the grading system, students would be given grades like A+, A, B, C, D and E.

The grading system is for the CBSE now and not for the state boards, Sibal explained.
