Mathura: Adding to the plight of farmers in Mathura whose crops were destroyed by unseasonal rains and hailstorm, the compensation cheques issued to them by the Akhilesh Yadav led Uttar Pradesh government bounced on Tuesday. But district officials claimed the cheques bounced due to technical errors.
"Satish could not get payment for his compensation cheque on April 13 due to a technical error between two banks. Though Rs 3 crore were deposited in SBI account on that day, however, it did not transfer the amount to Bank Of India, Chhatta, the same day," District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar said about a farmer.
Authorities have issued instructions to banks in Uttar Pradesh not to deny compensation to the rain-hit farmers and ensure payment to them on presenting the cheques for their crop losses, a senior official said.
The directions were issued after a farmer, Satish of Ajhai village, did not get his compensation amount due to some "technical errors".
The district magistrate said a meeting of bank managers has been called on Wednesday. He added, "Meanwhile, the banks have been instructed that the farmers should not be denied payment for their cheques in any case as there is no dearth of funds."
Kumar said so far 60,000 cheques have been distributed and payment to affected farmers has been ensured. For speedy payment four banks have been selected in Chhatta Tahsi, he added.
