Mumbai: A local court on Sunday remanded in police custody till June 5 a co-pilot with Jet Airways arrested for allegedly raping an air-hostess on several occasions since May 2009 on the pretext of marrying her.

Varun Agarwal (27) was arrested on Saturday from the domestic airport at suburban Vile Parle on charges of raping the 22-year-old air hostess who was in a live-in relationship with him.

Varun, who was booked under sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), was on Sunday produced before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate.

The police sought his custody on the grounds that the investigation is on and medical reports of both the accused and the victim are awaited.

The court remanded him in police custody till June 5. According to the police, the accused, who joined private air carrier Jet Airways in 2006, started luring the victim since 2008, a year after she joined the air carrier.

Expressing his love, Varun proposed to her and asked her for marriage but she refused his proposals several times.

Since he was constantly behind her, the victim finally accepted his love in 2008, assistant inspector Asha Korke said.

"He took her to a temple and presented her a ring and convinced her to stay at his house in suburban Marol.

"The victim agreed and moved into his house in May 2009.

However after a few months, Varun allegedly started assaulting her and threatened to throw acid on her face if she left him," Korke said.

Varun kept stalling the marriage following which the victim approached the police and lodged a complaint, the officer said.
