The City Police are on their toes to to keep everything in control regarding law and order during Onam and avoid even the tiniest lapse while dealing with the crowds.
They have also started surprise checks to prevent the flow of illicit liquor and the verification task has also begun to identify history-sheeters.
“We have started constant surprise checks to prevent the flow of illicit liquor,” said Deputy Commissioner of City Police (Law and Order), Putta Vimadalitya. Surprise checks are also being conducted at railway stations, bus stations and lodges to nab criminals who normally come from other states to carry out robbery during Onam. “Under Thampanoor, Nemom and Fort police station limits, around ten persons were taken into custody over the past one week for verification,“ said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
Also, additional police personnel have been deployed at various points to deal with the crowds. Thirty more police personnel have been assigned for duty at Fort police station, as the areas under its limit are the busiest during Onam days. Ten police personnel have been redeployed for duty in Traffic from the City Police. At Kovalam and Vizhinjam, 20 police personnel were deployed additionally on Sunday. “This will continue on all holidays up to Onam,” said Vimaladitya.
The police are also initiating strict against the footpath vendors to avoid difficulties to pedestrians. Only those vendors who have obtained sanction from the City Corporation will be allowed to carry out the sales on the roadsides.
Attakkulangara- Killippalam roadside and the space near Transport Bhavan will be utilised for parking. Constants checks are also being conducted in private buses to ensure that they stick to their schedule and do not divert from their normal routes, so that traffic blocks could be avoided.
At the same time, the Traffic Police have deployed around additional 50 personnel, most of them from Attakkulangara to M G Road and from Thampanoor to Overbridge. “Around 3,000 vehicles are coming per day to some of the textile shops in the area. But they have parking lot only for around 250 vehicles, which makes things really difficult,” said Traffic Assistant Commissioner (South) P Mohanan.
In addition to all these, the City Police will mobilise all its staff strength to manage the crowd during the peak five days of Onam.
