KOCHI: Aimed at attracting investment and presenting Kochi as an emerging logistics hub, the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) will take part in the Hamburg Port Festival being held from May 11 to 13. The festival marks the anniversary of Hamburg Port in Hanseatic city in Germany.The three-day festival brings together the major players in the shipping, port and water transport sectors across the world.The birth of Hamburg Port dates back to the period of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, who granted the people of Hamburg an exemption from customs duty for ships on the Elbe from Hamburg to the North Sea on May 7, 1189.Joint-secretary (ports) Rakesh Srivastava, Cochin Port Trust chairman Paul Antony, New Mangalore Port Trust chairman P Tamilvanan and other senior officials from the Ministry of Shipping and the Inland Waterways Authority of India will be part of the Indian delegation.The team will showcase the recent developments in the logistics sector in India and highlight the investment opportunities in the port sector in India.The prospects of Kochi as an emerging logistics hub and cruise destination will also be highlighted, the Cochin Port Trust authorities said.The number of cruise liners calling at Kochi port has touched 40 during the past a few years making it the most sought-after cruise destination in the country.Besides, the logistics operations at Vallarpadam, where the International Container Transshipment Terminal is located, is also picking up with the first container freight station in India commencing operations this week.The transshipment of containers is also expected to go up once the terminal is provided with relaxation in Cabotage Law for which the Planning Commission has granted permission.
