Sibling rivalry, Stalins likely elevation and land grabbing charges will cast a shadow on the general council meeting...

COIMBATORE/MADURAI: Renewed rivalry between DMK treasurer M K Stalin and his elder brother-cum-south zone organising secretary M K Alagiri for control over the party and the crackdown on heavyweights on charges of land grabbing will cast a shadow on the party's general council meeting, which is being held in Coimbatore on Saturday.
Speculation is rife among cadre in southern districts, who owe strong allegiance to Union Chemicals Minister Alagiri, that Stalin could be elevated as the DMK working president at the meet, where changes in organisational structure is expected to dominate proceedings. This is the first major meeting the party has organised after its debacle in the Assembly polls in April.

While the party was expected to deliberate upon its future political course, including an offer from the Congress to nominate two MPs for the Cabinet berths vacated by the DMK, now its energy will also be focused on the fresh sibling rivalry and the police onslaught on the red and black dhoti clad 'land grabbers'.

Alagiri would need the party leadership's support to weather the present crackdown. However, the talk is that while Alagiri may not make himself prominently visible at the meet, his supporters would be there to voice their views on the division of control in the party.

Arumugam, who has been the DMK's face in Salem for decades, was expected to articulate his views against the proposed change in the organisational structure of the party any move to switch to Parliamentary units instead of the existing district units would see him lose his grip over the district.

What's your reaction?
