A 26-year-old software professional, who had allegedly made away with Rs 1.25 lakh by hacking the credit card of a woman, has been arrested by the Crime Branch (CB) from Bangalore.
Saroj Kumar Tripathy, the accused, is son of a havildar and graduated from a Tangi-based technical college last year in the ICT branch. The Cyber Police Station, under the CB, acted after the woman complained about the fraud last month.
Being a computer science student, Saroj has knowledge of basic programming, which he used to secure the passcodes of the complainant. Police also suspect that he may have acquaintance with her and taking advantage of it, he stole the details and defrauded her.
Additional Director-General of Police, Crime Branch, BK Sharma said of the ` 1.25 lakh, the accused spent a staggering ` 90,000 on porn chatting alone.
“Our officers conducted a swift and meticulous investigation and identified Saroj and tracked him down in Bangalore. With assistance from Bangalore City Police, we managed to nab him and brought him for investigation,” he said.
Saroj has been booked under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code read with Section 66-C/66-D of Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008. In the last two months, the Cyber Police Station of the CB has registered as many as five cases, mostly relating to hacking and intellectual property theft. “We want to strengthen the Cyber Police Station and take up more cases. We request people to report such incidents,” the CB chief said.
