THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The issue of setting aside the road leading to City Corporation’s Boat Club at Kowdiar was one of the major debates that took place in the Council meeting that was held on Wednesday. Regarding the issue, Poojappura ward councillor and Congress leader Maheswaran Nair said that the children should be given a chance to test their roller skating skills without the rules and regulations coming in their way. Presently, the roller skating students from different parts of the city  come to the Poojappura Ground for their training. But the overcrowding of students has made training at the ground a difficult task. Maheswaran Nair also alleged that some government officials were trying to prevent the road from being set aside for roller skating coaching.  But the Mayor said that the issue was presently under the consideration of the Ombudsman and any decision could be taken only after the Ombudsman delivers his verdict.  Earlier, during the previous council meeting, the reluctance of the Mayor to set aside the road for coaching citing security concerns despite getting a favourable letter from the Kowdiar ward councillor Sathidevi had created protests among the opposition. The previous Mayor, Jayan Babu, had also ruled in favour of the plan during his tenure. Solid WasteIn order to reduce the amount of solid waste dumped in the City Corporation’s waste treatment plant at Vilappilsala, the City Corporation has decided to ask the commercial establishments in the city to set up their own solid waste management units. Health Standing Committee chairperson S Pushpalatha presented the adjournment motion stating the necessity of such a system as the accumulating solid waste at the waste treatment plant at Vilappilsala has become a social issue. The motion was unanimously passed by the council. The Council also decided to extend the contract given to the agency, Centre for Environment Development, that maintained the bio-fertilizer factory at the waste treatment plant at Vilappilsala by another year.
