BANGALORE: While the state government is in favour of implementing the Right to Education (RTE) Act, several Cabinet ministers have expressed apprehension that many government-run schools would face closure if the Act is implemented in letter and spirit.Law Minister Suresh Kumar said several ministers had expressed reservations over the implementation of the Supreme Court-endorsed RTE Act, which came up for “informal discussion” in the Cabinet meeting.Stating that the government had taken steps to implement the Act, he said the Cabinet asked Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri to work out yardsticks to identify beneficiary students who could get admission into private management schools.“Kageri was expected to give a report on the issue in the next Cabinet meeting,” he said, and added that the report would provide clarity on definition of minority institutions, and SC/ST and OBC beneficiaries.The decision of the government to seek a report on the mode of implementation of the Act from the minister has cast a shadow on its enforcement in the state from the ensuing academic year.Already several private institutions have made submissions to the government to defer the Act’s enforcement till next year as a majority of them have already completed admissions for the current academic year.
