CHENNAI: If speculation in New Delhi is anything to go by, Union Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran is in deep trouble over the 2G spectrum allocation. That is further bad news for the DMK, which is already smarting under an electoral defeat and the incarceration of former telecom minister A Raja and party MP Kanimozhi in Tihar jail.Though former chief minister and DMK party chief M Karunanidhi put up a brave face at Tiruvarur on Sunday night, saying that the next ‘change’ would bring about a change in government, suggesting that the DMK would capture power again, it remains to the seen if the party can survive the charges that are now being hurled at its top leaders. The CBI, whose investigations are being monitored by the Supreme Court, appears to be making a determined effort to dig up the 2G dirt, which does not seem to augur well for the DMK that has already lost its credibility among the people of Tamil Nadu. When Raja stepped down as telecom minister, the portfolio was not given to another DMK nominee, but to Kapil Sibal, depriving the party of a berth in the Union Cabinet. If Maran is forced to put in his papers, then again there would be no guarantee that the textiles portfolio would stay with the DMK.That would leave M K Alagiri as the lone Union Cabinet representative from the DMK - the four other party nominees only Union ministers of State. But then Alagiri had to appear before the Melur court, near Madurai, to get bail in a case relating to an attack on a tahsildar during the run up to the Assembly elections.Whatever happens in the tahsildar attack case, Alagiri may have to face a tough time in his own terrain and may not be able to channelise his energy to rebuild the party.Similarly, with Karunanidhi dejected over daughter Kanimozhi’s arrest, it is not clear how much he would be able to motivate the cadre to face the next elections — the Lok Sabha polls are three years away — if his son Alagiri and grand nephew Maran are in trouble.
