Mumbai: Three people were injured in a case of rash driving in Mumbai. The car involved in the accident overturned several times on the JJ flyover in the city.
The driver was allegedly drunk. Though he escaped unhurt, his three friends suffered mild injuries.
The accident comes in the wake of a massive drive by the Mumbai police to bring drunk drivers to book.
Over 1,000 people have been booked and arrested for drunk driving by the traffic police in the last three months.
Meanwhile, a Mumbai-based company, Micronet, is working on technology that can put brakes on drunk driving.
Each time you drink and drive, the car’s breathaliser senses it and automatically sends an SMS to your cell phone.
Then, press a few keys on your phone and the car will seize up. That's particularly helpful if you want to use your phone as a remote control. That way you can paralyse your car even as your drunken driver tries to start it up.
Statistics reveal that 600 lives were lost to road accidents in 2006 and 400 dead in 2007 so far. Since June 2007, 6,091 people have been caught, and 1,103 have been jailed for drunken driving, while 7,800 motorists have been arrested, and 10 have been jailed for rash driving.
The crackdown has brought down the number of fatal accidents drastically from 60 in June to just 9 in August.
In an attempt to bring some order in traffic on these chaotic roads, the police have aggressively started applying the rule book.
