A DYFI activist was killed during the hartal-related violence at Thachangad junction in Pallikkara panchayat in the district on Thursday. The deceased is P Manoj, 24, Ambangad Chikanam unit president of the DYFI and a CPM member.
SFI district joint secretary Shivaprasad was also injured in the clashes.
Manoj was reportedly beaten up by a group of 20 people who came in motorcycles at Thachangad junction. According to Shivaprasad, he managed to escape the attack but the assailants beat up Manoj even after he fainted. It is learnt that CPM Panayal local committee secretary Karunakaran was attacked by the same group earlier in the day.
Manoj was taken to a private hospital in Uduma and later to Carewell Hospital in Kasargod. He breathed his last on the way to the hospital. His body was taken to the Kasargod General Hospital for inquest, and sent to the Pariyaram Medical College for postmortem.
According to Bekal SI Uttam Das, the reason for the death was not clear. A conclusion can be reached only when the postmortem report comes, he added.
The district leadership of the CPM alleged that Manoj died following the attack by Muslim League workers. “Muslim League activists from neighbouring places came in motorbikes and beat Manoj to death,” CPM district secretary K P Satheesh Chandran said.
Meanwhile, the Muslim League leadership in the district denied the allegations made by the CPM. Former minister and League district committee president Cherkkalam Abdulla said that the party workers did not attack Manoj, but he collapsed and died during the protests. “Moreover, the area is not a Muslim League stronghold,” he added.
The DYFI will observe Black Day on Friday to mourn the death of Manoj.
Manoj is survived by mother Narayani and siblings Sureshan, Manikantan and Sulochana. He was an employee of the Yamaha showroom in Vidyanagar.
