But somehow when you're standing with a mic in your hand, the feeling is very different. Different in the sense, that you don't get the feeling of being alone.
What is it about that little microphone with a tag that makes you feel like you have company?
Maybe it's not company that it gives you...rather a mission that needs to be accomplished. A task at hand that needs to be done.
And blame it on my insecurity, but when there are ten other people holding on to that familiar looking piece of plastic, my first impulse is to panic.
What if they get more information than I do?
What if I miss out on something? Something that could give a whole new direction to the story?
What if their research is more thorough than mine?
Hell! I should have planned better!

And then inevitably my camera person turns around...gives me a long stare and says
"relax...we're not getting out of here till we get every bit of information you want. Every shot...every byte. Just relax. We'll get a good story"

For about 10 seconds I'm completely relaxed and then it strikes me that I may not be able to tell him exactly what shots I want...more panic. My camera person gives up.

And as I write this I realize that it's the constant pressure to meet deadlines, the panic and the urgency that makes news fun.
