EC orders Rahul to leave Rae Bareli
The poll panel has asked Rahul Gandhi to leave Rae Bareli by Saturday evening and told Sonia Gandhi to remove all her posters from government buildings.

Rae Bareli: The Election Commission has asked Rahul Gandhi to leave Rae Bareli by Saturday evening.

The young Congress MP, who has been campaigning for his mother and party President Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha byelection, was on Friday told to leave as he has special protection.

In its order, the poll watchdog in fact ordered all political functionaries getting security from the state government to leave the constituency immediately after the campaign is over.

The EC order says political functionaries, who are not voters, have to leave the constituency immediately after the electioneering gets over at 5 pm on Saturday.

But this would not apply to candidates and their agents, EC sources said. Rahul Gandhi is not a voter in Rae Bareli while his sister Priyanka is Sonia Gandhi's poll agent.

The reaction of the Gandhi scion and the Congress to the poll panel's directive was not known immediately.

In another move the Election Commission asked Sonia Gandhi, a candidate for Rae Bareli Lok Sabha bypoll, to have removed all the posters of her party from government buildings by early

Saturday morning.

Taking a tough line, the EC served the Congress chief with a notice asking her to remove within 12 hours all posters of her party from government buildings in the constituency.

The 12-hour deadline ends at 4 am on Saturday since the notice was given to her at 4 pm on Friday.

What's your reaction?
