Mumbai: Tax defaulter and Pune stud farm owner Hasan Ali Khan's aide Kashinath Tapuriah, a Kolkata-based businessman, is being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at its Mumbai office. The ED is likely to grill Tapuriah and Bihar Congress leader Amlendu Pandey about their relation with Khan.
Tapuriah will be questioned for two days. In fact, ED officials plan to jointly interrogate Tapuriah and Pandey. The Sessions Court in Mumbai has permitted ED to take Tapuriah from Arthur Road jail to ED office in South Mumbai on April 18 and April 19. The court also extended the judicial custody of Tapuriah till April 29.
Pandey was grilled on April 15 by the ED for allegedly procuring a passport from Patna for Hasan Ali Khan by forging documents.
Khan, Pandey and Tapuriah had allegedly travelled to Singapore in 1997 to open an account in the United Bank of Switzerland.
Tapuriah was arrested on March 24 by the ED in connection with the Hasan Ali Khan tax evasion and money-laundering cases.
CNN-IBN had exposed bank transactions connecting Tapuriah to Khan. The 75-year-old Kolkata businessman was arrested after three days of questioning.
The ED had said that searches at the residence of Tapuriah had led to recovery of large number of documents including alleged transfer instructions from the account of Khan to various other accounts, and a copy of correspondence with United Bank of Switzerland.
Khan, in his statement, had claimed that he had applied for a second passport on the instructions of Tapuriah in spite of his existing passport being in court's custody, the agency said.
