Engineering aspirants in a dilemma over choice of stream

Anxiety among the engineering aspirants, regarding the correct choice of stream, has aggravated as the official date for the EAMCET counselling has been delayed further. Many of them are surfing the net and consulting their seniors to make a choice which will held them to bag a good job.

Many students are looking beyond Information Technology (IT) to the circuit branches like Computer Science (CS), IT, Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) and Electrical Communication Engineering (ECE).

Experts point out that demand for IT has been dropping gradually. “CS is preferred over IT in view of the placements. The streams which are offering an edge in the job market are ECE, CS and EEE. Also, the demand for Mechanical Engineering( ME) and Civil Engineering (CE) is on the rise,” observes Dr. N.V Ramana Rao, registrar of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad.

With infrastructure and transport sectors as well as Public Sector Units (PSUs) hiring freshers from core engineering subjects, the demand is set to grow in the academic year 2012-13.

“Contrary to the popular belief, PSUs are offering attractive packages, though, from 2012, they have made GATE scores mandatory for inviting candidates for interview, says placement and training officer at Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE) V. Uma Maheshwar.
