Ensure Dalits can worship in temples

Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsThe National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), on Wednesday, asked the district administration of Krishnagiri to ensure that Dalits of Kalkeri village are allowed to worship in the temples situated at the villages, which they alleged were beyond their reach owing to discrimination by Caste Hindus.According to the complaint filed by the district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Untouchabilty Eradication Wing, members belonging to the Dalit community at Kalkeri in Krishnagiri were denied entry into two temples—Karagammal Samy and Anjaneya Samy—at the village. The priests of the temples had also discriminated against them during festivals when the deity was taken around the village and refused to conduct pujas on behalf of them.While this issue of entry into the two temples was solved after years of protracted legal battles and intervention of the official machinery, the caste Hindus allegedly built a new temple at the village and usurped the deities of the other two temples.The complainant claimed that entry was not given to the Dalits to the new temple and the access to the other two older temples too was difficult.first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
