New Delhi: His party recently lost the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. But that hasn’t stopped Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan from throwing his weight around.
The outgoing minister has been caught on tape threatening an Election Commission official when he had gone to the poll panel’s office in Rampur to collect his election victory certificate.
Khan was reportedly upset as he had to walk to the election office through a muddy track. He is area’s sitting MLA and returned to power on March 11.
In the video, Khan is seen threatening an official, saying he was a minister till a new government takes over and that it was he who got the official transferred to Rampur.
“I am still the minister and will remain one till the new government comes in. I still have the right to take action against you. This is very disappointing. Is this the reason why we brought you here? You cried to me to get to this place and this is how you act now? How could you ask me to walk through that road," he is seen saying to the official.
This is not the first time Khan has waded into controversy. He was recently criticised for comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ravana during campaigning for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Last year, he was pulled up by the Supreme Court for saying that the rape of a woman and her daughter near a highway in Bulandshahr could be a "political conspiracy" to defame the Samajwadi Party government.
Reacting to the latest controversy, expelled SP leader Amar Singh said Khan should be taken to a mental hospital. “I am very happy that I am not in the Samajwadi Party if it has got people like Azam Kham. I am not shocked by his behavior. Azam Khan needs to be taken to a mental hospital," Singh told CNN-News18. He went on to target outgoing chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, saying he took no action against rape accused minister Gayatri Prajapati even after receiving a letter from the Governor.
BJP leader Vijay Bahadur Pathak said the SP leaders “seem to not have realised that they are no longer in power".
Trying to control the damage, SP spokesperson Deepak Mishra said should not have used such words. “The SP is in this state of affairs because of leaders like Azam Khan," he told CNN-News18.
