KOCHI: Around 25,000 students in Vypeen can participate in the ‘Amma Than Bakshanam’ scheme, soon to be launched as a part of the intense education development programme ‘Velicham.’ This nutritious noon meal scheme is an initiative of MLA S Sarma. The programme, inaugurated recently, will be implemented from December 1.According to the sources, although, the government has been providing mid-day meals to the school students, the scheme does not support nutritious diet plan. Therefore, the students will be provided nutrient-rich food items under the latest scheme. The school will provide the necessary items. “The specialty of this scheme is that the food will be prepared by the school’s Mothers Teachers Association. Parents will take the responsibility of preparing the food in shifts,” said Arun, headmaster, Government UP School, Vypeen. ‘Velicham’ aims at improving the educational standards of students in both academic and co-curricular activities in government and aided schools. It also focuses on helping students to face examination and live a brave life by boosting their confidence.The programme is being introduced for the first time in Kerala in Vypeen constituency which comprises 55 schools. The programme was inaugurated at the St Mary’s High School, Vallarpadam, by Rev Francis Kalaraickal recently. District Collector Sheik Pareeth inaugurated another scheme, which meets the basic requirement of the schools. This is a project worth Rs 4 crore, said the sources.
