New Delhi: Freedom fighters and their spouses would now get an enhanced pension of around Rs 10,000 per month effective October 2.

The decision to enhance the basic pension of freedom fighters and the basic dependent family pension of spouses of deceased freedom fighters by an amount of Rs 2,330 per month was taken by the Union Cabinet in New Delhi on Thursday, Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the meeting.

Currently, the basic pension to the majority of freedom fighters so far was around Rs 4,000 per month and it was decided to increase it for each of the three category.

These categories are those who were prisoners in Andaman's cellular jail, those who suffered imprisonment outside British India and others including the members of the Indian National Army.

While the October pension for all these categories would be around Rs 10,000, inclusive of the dearness relief rate of 58 per cent, the amount would go on rising in the ensuing months depending on the rate, he added.
