KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday extended till November 30 the deadline for the completion of patch work and maintenance of roads in the state.Extending the deadline, the High Court directed the state government to complete the entire repair work and maintenance of roads undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) on or before November 30.Justice Harun-Ul-Rashid extended the deadline after considering a request from the state government seeking more time. The court also directed the state government to submit a detailed progress report on the repair and maintenance of roads undertaken so far. The case has been posted for hearing on December 15.“In the light of the efforts taken to carry out the repair and other patch works in a time-bound manner, the time can be extended,” the court said.On September 1, the court had issued an order directing the state to complete the repair work of the damaged state Highways, National Highways and other roads maintained by the PWD  within a period of three weeks. The order was issued considering a petition by C P Ajith Kumar of Kochi, seeking a directive to the  PWD to take up and complete the repairing and maintenance work of the roads as early as possible.  The chief engineer, Roads and Bridges, PWD, Thiruvanathapuram, and chief engineer, National Highways, had submitted an affidavit stating that steps had been taken to carry out the repairs and other works within a time-bound manner. Both agencies submitted that the remaining repair works would be completed on or before November 30.The details of the work done till date, the progress of the works and the date of  proposed completion were also mentioned in the affidavit.  The government also pointed out that the delay in repairing and maintenance of roads were due to certain reason “beyond their control”. It is based on this request that the court extended the deadline.
