Mumbai: Heavy rains continued to lash Maharashtra with Konkan region bearing the brunt of the downpours which threw road and rail traffic out of gear at a number of places barring Mumbai.
About 1,500 passengers, who were on board the Madhusagar Express, which was stranded near Nivsar in Ratnagiri district after a portion of the railway track caved in last night, were shifted to another train.
Some 25 odd buses were arranged for these stranded passengers and were taken to nearby Adavli station from where a special train was arranged for further journey, police said. The passengers were provided biscuits and water.
Two incidents of landslides were reported, on either side of Nivsar station but no one was injured, officials said.
Kolhapur district in western Maharashtra also witnessed heavy showers for the past two days. Fifty villages in the district have been cut off due to heavy rains, police said.
Panchganga river is flowing above the danger mark, they said, adding 18 roads in the district were closed due to rains.
Heavy rains also lashed Gondia in Vidarbha region as it witnessed 131.2 mm rains till 8 am on Sunday. Four gates each of Pujaritola and Kalisarar dams were opened. Uncleaned drains led to water logging in several parts of the city.
Meanwhile, the Met Department predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Greater Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg over the next two days.
However, in Mumbai, road, rail and air traffic remained largely unaffected officials said, adding, minor complaints of water logging were reported from suburban areas Andheri, Malad and Hindmata.
Heavy rains hit life in Orissa
Bhubaneswar: Incessant rains threw life out of gear in many parts of Orissa besides creating a flood-like situation in its southern region on Sunday.
Bansadhara river was in spate, while many rivulets and nullahs were overflowing in Rayagada, Koraput and Gajapati district creating breaches on several important roads, officials said.
Water level in Bansadhara rose menacingly to touch 54.7 metres at Kashinagar in Gajapati district against the danger level of 54.6 metres, they said adding road communication between Rayagada and Koraput was disrupted due
to breaches caused by gushing waters.
Road link between Rayagada and Kashipur was also snapped as they were submerged in water, they said. Following incessant rains in upper catchment areas, water level in Hirakud dam on river Mahanadi stood at 598.81 feet as over 21,112 cusecs of water was flowing into the reservoir and abut 32,400 cusec was being released.
Amidst heavy downpour at different places since yesterday, Keonjhar recorded over 60 mm rainfall since this morning followed by 50.5 mm in Balangir and 44 mm in Sambalpur.
Bhubaneshwar received about 21.8 mm rainfall since this morning and had recorded 63.8 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 0830 hrs on Sunday.
The met office predicted heavy rains in several places for the next two days. Rains have already claimed at least seven lives in the state with four persons getting swept by flood water in Rayagada district and three others falling to lightning in Cuttack city.
