New Delhi: You would think a woman would come up with a better solution on the recent spate of crime against women but on Wednesday, actress Hema Malini suggested that women should not venture out alone at night in these unsafe times.
The actress was present at an event in Pune and was asked to comment on the recent gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai. The actress stated that the police and government need to take strong measures but women should also act more responsibly and not venture out alone.
An article in Times Of India quoted her as saying, "Terrible things are happening. Places like the Shakti Mill compound should not be so accessible that they can be used by anyone to create mischief. This is a lesson, but it should not have come at the cost of a girl's honour. Women also need to be more careful. They should not take it so easy and go anywhere as you can get caught. In the Mahabharata, Draupadi was always helped by Lord Krishna. But we as a society are not as spiritually evolved, so women should not expect anyone to come to their rescue," she said.
The 23 year old photojournalist was gang raped at Shakti Mills where she had gone to cover a story along with her male colleague. The incident created shock waves in Mumbai, a city which is considered a safe place for women.
