New Delhi: Healthcare services were disrupted at the Safdarjung Hospital in the city on Sunday when resident doctors went on an indefinite strike demanding security and protection from the authorities after a doctor was thrashed by the relatives of a patient.
Nearly 1200 resident doctors, including MBBS students, are taking part in the strike.
The resident doctors association gave the strike call after a doctor, a nurse and a hospital guard were beaten up by the relatives of a patient named Prabhu who died at the hospital on Saturday afternoon. He was admitted on Friday with jaundice and low haemoglobin level.
"The patient's relatives beat up one of our nurses, a resident doctor and a guard. They held the doctor responsible for the death of the patient," Dr Chandrabhan, President of the Resident Doctors Association, said.
"This is not happening for the first time. In the past too, this type of incidents had taken place and we were given promise of security, which has not been fulfilled. We want a permanent solution to this and the strike will continue till issues of proper security arrangement and safety of the doctors and nurses are permanently taken care of," he said.
Medical Superintendent Dr M K Mohanty has called a meeting with the association to find out a solution to the problem, sources said.
The medical services were disrupted on Sunday but senior doctors were trying keep the functioning normal. The situation may worsen if the strike continues through Monday, when the outpatients department will reopen.
Earlier in June, junior doctors, including postgraduate students, interns and junior residents of the hospital had been on strike for two days to protest against alleged lack of basic facilities for them.
