How Other Countries Protect Their Borders Against Cross-border Terror Attacks

Terrorists, dressed as policemen, mounted a pre-dawn, fidayeen style attack at the Army camp in Nagrota on the outskirts of Jammu.

Seven soldiers, including two officers, were killed in the attack. Soldiers have cordoned-off the area and combing operations are underway.

As many as 42 army jawans have been killed in several terror attacks in 2016.

Here are examples on how some other countries protect their borders and the steps they take to prevent cross-border terror attacks.

FLAWS IN INDIAN FENCING

The BSF presently has an anti-infiltration obstacle system (AIOS) in place that includes border fence, electric live wires, sensors, sirens, foot patrols, floodlights, other surveillance devices including hand held thermal imagers

The AIOS, which costs Rs 8 crore per km, gets buried in winters under heavy snow and then it becomes easier for the infiltrators to walk over and enter India.

Israel, hailed to have the best border protection system in the world, depends more on technology than humans to protect its border -- like high-quality long-range day cameras along with night observation systems, third generation thermal imagers, long-range detection radars, electronic touch and motion sensor

An Israel firm, Elbit Systems, designed the Israel border fence and was also roped in by US to build a modern fence on the US-Mexico border.

Madhukar Gupta Committee set up by MHA in April 2016 suggested has urged a grid-based system along the border, wherein, at vulnerable stretches, centre oks smart fencing post Pathankot Attack.

EXPECTED TIME FOR INDIA TO COMPLETE FENCING ALONG PAKISTAN AND BANGLADESH BORDER

The fence work along Indo-Pakistan Border is proposed to be completed by December, 2018 through physical or non-physical barriers.

The ongoing fence work along Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) is targeted for completion by March, 2019

WHAT India CAN LEARN FROM OTHER COUNTRIES

Egypt and Gaza Strip

To stop smugglers from using tunnels, the Egyptian government started building an underground metal wall in 2009.

Israel and West Bank

Israel started building a 420-mile-long wall that separates the country from the West Bank. It is five to eight meters tall and varies in form. Some parts are built with concrete, others with wire.

U.S. and Mexico

In 2006, construction started on a border fence separating the United States and Mexico after violence, drug-related crimes as well as illegal immigration surged. President Obama suspended all such projects in 2010 but Trump decided to build 2000 mile wall.

Morocco and Western Sahara

A disputed territory in North Africa — is sealed from Morocco by a sand wall. It was built in 1987 to stop attacks from separatist troops in Western Sahara

Bostwana and Zimbabwe

The border between Botswana and Zimbabwe is separated by an electrified fence.
